Photographing New York City from Remarkable Locations

The true subject of this workshop is the amazing and fantastic city of New York. There are endless possibilities when making images of the City; our approach is to explore out-of-the-way spots that are filled with interesting and exciting sites. We will travel to places such as the fantasy land of Coney Island and to areas in Queens and the Bronx, and we will take the Staten Island Ferry to that unique borough. Critical elements of photographing these places—including lighting, environment, and location; composition, camera position, and formats; and the relationship between place and photographer—are explored and analyzed. The course will culminate in an online exhibit featuring students’ best pictures.
