This course explores both sides of the U,S.-Latin American relationship, tracing its development over time and analyzing its current challenges. Throughout the course, students will integrate U.S. and Latin American perspectives. We will explore questions including: what interests and objectives shape U.S. policy towards Latin America? What interests and objectives have shaped Latin American states' policies towards the U.S.? How have non-governmental actors in both the U.S. and Latin America influenced international relations across the Western Hemisphere? Ultimately, the course will analyze continuity and changes in the complex, often tense relationships within the Western Hemisphere from the Monroe Doctrine to the Trump Corollary on issues varying from intervention, trade, immigration, and democracy.
