The energy sector is undergoing rapid transformation, with demand for skilled professionals expected to grow dramatically in the coming years. As electricity projects expand and the grid evolves, there is an increasing need for expertise in project development and finance. This surge is driven by the accelerating shift toward electrification across homes, businesses, and transportation and by the rising energy demands of data centers and digital infrastructure.
This program is designed for those pursuing careers in project finance and development for utilities or energy developers, as well as professionals in public policy, urban planning, or related fields.
Developed by the NYU School of Professional Studies Center for Global Affairs, the Electricity Industry Essentials Certificate equips participants with foundational knowledge and applied skills to navigate this dynamic and fast-changing sector. The curriculum explores the core pillars of energy project development, policy, markets, and finance.
Target Audience
Professionals aiming to work in project finance and development for utilities or project developers, public policy, government, and urban planning, or other related areas. The focus will be on the US electricity industry and some international context through case studies.

- Understand the structure and function of energy systems and electricity markets in the US.
- Navigate key regulatory and policy frameworks governing electricity and clean energy development.
- Analyze project finance structures and the lifecycle of utility-scale and distributed energy projects.
- Evaluate risks and strategies associated with electricity project development.
- Apply global insights through international case studies clean energy transmission, electrification, and electricity development.
Students should take course GLOB1-CE3001, Foundations of the Electrical System, in their first semester and GLOB1-CE3101, Case Studies and Emerging Trends in Electricity Projects Development, in their final semester.

This program is ideal for professionals aiming to work in project finance and development for utilities or project developers, public policy and urban planning, or other related areas.
Students are required to take the Foundations of the Electricity System first and have flexibility to complete the remaining courses in their preferred order, although we recommend taking the Case Studies and Emerging Trends in Electricity Projects Development course last.
