Beginning Screenwriting
Learn the basic elements of screenwriting for movies and TV via lectures, script readings, discussions, and in-class writing exercises. All the fundamentals of visual storytelling are covered in depth, including character, plot, theme, dialogue, genre, and format. Assignments familiarize you with dramatic conflict, scene structure, subtext, and subplots as you advance from idea to outline to scripted pages. By the end of the course, you will have an outline and about 30 pages of script. This course may be used to fulfill the requirements of the Certificate in Television and Screenwriting.
This course is delivered in an online format:
- For sections that indicate “Instructor Led” under “Location,” teaching and learning occur in real time (synchronous) using chat and video conferencing to create an interactive virtual classroom.
- For sections that indicate “Self-Paced” under “Location,” there are no required real-time meetings. The instructor interacts with students and facilitates group discussions within NYU’s online learning platform (asynchronous). There are weekly deadlines for lesson and assignment completion.
