Within sight of the ever-growing megalopolis of Cairo rises the world-famous Great Pyramid of Giza. Yet, Cairo is so much more than that. This course unpacks the other Cairo: the medieval city! Since its 969 AD founding, Cairo has been an epicenter of the Islamic world, shaped by the Fatimid and Mamluk dynasties. We’ll explore the staggering 400+ historic Islamic monuments still standing—a legacy often overshadowed by their ancient neighbors. We’ll also trace Cairo's complex identity as a cultural capital, a British colonial enclave, and a hotbed for revolution, analyzing how these layers influenced its urban fabric. Finally, as the Grand Egyptian Museum (described as the world’s largest archaeological museum) has finally opened, we’ll dive into Cairo’s museum history—home to the Middle East's first—and analyze the significance of this massive new institution. This is Cairo beyond the postcards.
