Maxine SteinhausClinical Assistant Professor
Maxine Steinhaus, a Clinical Assistant Professor of ESL, has been teaching at the ALI since 1981. She received her master’s degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1984. She has been Coordinator of the Day Intensive and the Saturday Comprehensive Programs. Currently, she is overseeing the ALI's special programs, including the intensive 6-week Mastering English Summer Program. She has developed classes with a focus on contemporary American literature as well as classes on the American justice system and the history of New York through film. Her teaching approach is always student-centered, and is inspired by the work of Paulo Freire, who believed that education should be liberating and self-empowering.
