Media, Writing, and Communications Certificate in Professional Writing

Diploma Description

This certificate has been discontinued as of Fall 2023, and is no longer accepting new students.

As an alternative, students may consider the Certificate in Professional Writing and Communications for related course options.

The fully online Certificate in Professional Writing highlights real-life professional scenarios as a way to build practical skills for mid-level professionals in the areas of writing and editing. A strong emphasis on intercultural communication and communication technologies is embedded across the curriculum. In each course, students will craft professional-quality portfolio pieces from course work that can be used to demonstrate their ability to meet the growing employment demand for professional communication skills.

Students will focus on writing and editing a variety of professional documents across digital and traditional formats; crafting compelling narratives that match the tone and intentions of a company, brand, or campaign; and using writing as tool for self-promotion and professional development.

This certificate must be completed within three years of taking the first certificate-eligible course. The certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete the two required courses and the three elective courses listed below, which can be substituted with other Media, Writing, and Communications certificate courses, pending departmental review and approval.
