Transcreation and Localization
The confluence of computing, globalization and digital media has created new models for the translation profession. These new models are transforming how translations are done in both approach and in the use of technology. This course will introduce two of the fastest-growing areas of the translation industry: transcreation and localization. Transcreation is the melding of copywriting and translation using the source text as an inspiration to create culturally relevant marketing campaigns in target markets. This approach has found wide adoption in the advertising industry. Localization adapts electronic media (websites and software) for other languages and cultures. Localization and transcreation merge in websites used for marketing and in video games creating niche opportunities for translators with the right skills. This course, applicable to any language pair where English is the target language, will provide students with an overview of the central concepts of these approaches and what is involved in doing work in these fields, and the opportunities in the current marketplace.
This course counts toward the Certificate in Translation Practice.
