Effective On-Camera Communication

Our increasingly media-driven world requires effective communicators to master the ability to connect with their audience through the lens of a camera. Presenting, pitching, and persuading on-camera is no longer the unique skill set of broadcast professionals, it's an essential tool for executives, community leaders, teachers, sales professionals, journalists, and anyone who wants to engage an audience around the corner and around the world.
The backbone of this course involves developing practical on-camera experience starting from day one. Students will be encouraged to write scripted presentations specific to their fields of expertise and will build confidence through hands-on exercises that reinforce best practices for engaging a remote audience. This class will prepare students to navigate on-camera presentations of all scopes and sizes - from hosting a successful online meeting for a dozen participants to broadcasting live to an audience of millions.
Throughout the course, professional guest-speakers will join to talk about their experiences on-camera, share stories, and answer questions
Topics include building the confidence to speak with authority, managing stress and anxiety, equipment selection (lighting, cameras, backgrounds), working with teleprompter and cue cards, finding your inner storyteller, voice and delivery training.
This course is part of the Certificate in Professional Writing and Communications. It may be taken to pursue the certificate, or as a standalone course. Questions? Contact us at The Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts (PALA). Email sps.pala.ce@nyu.edu or call 212-998-7289.
