Language and Translation Certificate in Translation Industry Essentials

Diploma Description

To earn a certificate, students must declare their candidacy at the start of their program of study. To do so, please use the button above.

Whether you are a novice translator exploring a new career path, or a practicing translator seeking a rigorous educational foundation for your work, the Certificate in Translation Industry Essentials is ideally suited to helping participants achieve their professional goals. This comprehensive certificate—applicable to translation from any language into English—provides an overview of translation concepts and techniques, as well as hands-on training in the translation of documents into English from a wide range of fields: financial, commercial, legal, and other areas pertinent to today’s market. Students receive an introduction to the subject-specific knowledge and terminology required to work competently in today’s translation environment, while acquiring critical editing and proofreading skills. They begin to build a portfolio of their own translations—an essential tool for all professional translators—and gain the confidence to handle assignments with speed and improved fluency.

The Certificate, which consists of two required courses and three electives, must be completed within three years of taking the first certificate-eligible course.

Before pursuing the Certificate, students are expected already to possess native-level or near-native level proficiency in both their source language (the language they will translate from) and the target language, which is English. Courses focus on the techniques and practice of professional translation, not on developing language proficiency.
