Health in Developing Countries

The world has made immense strides in improving health outcomes and increasing life-expectancy over the past century in large part due to improved medicine, infrastructure and technology transfer between nations.  However, these gains have been uneven. Many developing countries continue to face challenges across key metrics such as maternal and child mortality, burden of infectious and chronic disease, and life-expectancy. This course will offer students an overview of the most important health challenges facing the world today. Through the lens of the Sustainable Development Goals, students will be introduced to key topics important to global health including key international health programs and initiatives; measures of disease burden; determinants of health outcomes; national and international health systems; global health funding mechanisms and key stakeholders. We will end the course with a look at how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted progress towards meeting global health goals and the way forward.
