Teaching a language requires a strong grounding in the fundamental principles governing its grammar, lexis, and phonology. In this course, you will examine the structure, vocabulary, and pronunciation of English and develop the necessary skills for practical classroom applications.

  • A basic working knowledge of the rules and conventions of English grammar, including but not limited to the formation of phrases, clauses, and sentences; tense, time, and aspect; active and passive voice; and modality
  • A basic working knowledge of the rules and conventions of English lexis, including synonyms, antonyms, roots, spelling, and word choice
  • A basic working knowledge of the rules and conventions of English phonology, including the pronunciation of phonemes, intonation (pitch, stress, and rhythm), and linked speech
  • The ability to apply the knowledge outlined above to hands-on lesson planning and teaching
