Prerequisites: Bachelor’s degree and an advanced level of English proficiency in all skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening)

Demand for teachers of English as a second, additional, or foreign language is strong and growing. The five courses of the fully online Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages provide candidates with the theoretical background and practical, hands-on teaching skills necessary to work in the highly rewarding field of teaching English as a second or foreign language. In addition to asynchronous course work and the practicum, students will have opportunities to observe experienced language teachers in action—via Zoom—as a practical resource for their training.

Courses can be taken individually or stacked to earn the certificate. This program is a great fit for recent university graduates who want to explore the field, as well as experienced teachers seeking to enrich their practice and advance their careers. It is ideal for those interested in intercultural communication, global engagement, and community service. Students who complete the certificate will be prepared for opportunities to teach adults in a variety of educational settings throughout the world. This certificate must be completed within three years of taking the first certificate-eligible course. The certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete the five required courses, which include a practicum.

Classroom Teaching Techniques

In this course, acquire a basic knowledge of all aspects of becoming an effective instructor of English to speakers of other languages.

Examine the structure, vocabulary, and pronunciation of English, and develop the necessary skills for practical classroom applications.

Instructional Methodology

Acquire the terminology, concepts, and teaching approaches necessary to instruct learners in the four core skill areas of language study.

Classroom Assessment for Language Teachers

This course will familiarize you with classroom language assessment concepts and help you to distinguish between assessment and testing.

Teaching Practicum

Work closely with your peers and your instructor as you teach a group of English language learners at least once a week for 60 minutes.
