Tisch Center Internship Spotlight: Giselle Garvey, Besen Partners

Giselle Garvey is a senior in the B.S. in Hotel and Tourism Management at the Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality with a concentration in Hotel Development and a minor in Mandarin Chinese. In this post, she tells us more about her internship this spring semester.

Where are you interning and what is your job title?

I’m currently interning at Besen Partners, a real estate advisory, brokerage and management firm. My job title is Hotel Investment Sales and Capital Markets Intern.

What projects have you been working on so far?

I’ve mainly been working within the Hotel Advisory Group in assisting our director with underwriting distressed hotel assets and managing hotel transitions of all classes and sizes. I’m also currently working on creating and launching the firm’s monthly hotel newsletter to provide industry news, trends, and active property listings to our clients and to expand our audience.

Have there been any challenges in your internship so far? If so, how have you learned to overcome them?

This internship has been an amazing experience thus far, as I learn something new every day and am always busy with intriguing tasks. The most challenging aspect is the transition from past internships that might not have required so much work, to being responsible for large projects and maintaining relationships with important clients.

What do you hope to take away from your internship?

I hope to become more fluent with my financial skills. It’s an entirely different mindset from learning hotel finance in a classroom to actually implementing into real, multimillion dollar transactions. In addition, I’m excited for the opportunity to be given so much responsibility within an intern role, so I hope to perform well and take on any challenges that come my way.

What are your future plans?

As a senior at NYU, I’m currently seeking hotel and real estate valuation, finance, advisory, and development and acquisitions positions upon my graduation in May 2021. While I am very passionate about hospitality and real estate within the workforce, I also find it important to stay up to date on both industries, so I’ve recently created an Instagram account to further build upon my enthusiasm and love for this career. You can follow me at @hoteliergg! I hope to further promote both sustainability and diversity within the real estate industry.
