Victoria Kahn is a student in the B.S. in Hotel and Tourism Management and is pursuing a minor in The Business of Entertainment, Media, and Technology. In this post, she tells us more about her internship this spring semester.
Where are you interning and what is your title?
I am interning at the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau, the official Tourism Promotion Agency for the City of Philadelphia and the primary sales and marketing agency for the Pennsylvania Convention Center. My job title is Communications Intern.
What projects have you been working on so far?
As a communications intern, I research and write content for the Official Visitors Guide for the city of Philadelphia. Additionally, I work on blog posts for the DMO’s website which includes taking long backgrounder documents and editing them down while also researching and writing blog posts. I assist with social media support, and this internship has also granted me the opportunity to help plan global promotional events.
Have there been any challenges in your internship so far? If so, how have you learned to overcome them?
One challenge that I faced during the internship was learning to balance multiple projects at the same time. Dealing with overlapping deadlines can be difficult, but as the internship progressed, I learned how to prioritize and work efficiently. To overcome this challenge, I used project management software to organize my assignments and to stay on track with my work.
What do you hope to take away from your internship?
This internship has taught me how to work in a fast-paced environment where you must handle multiple projects at once and also the need to stay up to date on news and events occurring in the city. The communications department at the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau serves as the central hub of the organization which encompasses interacting with different departments such as global tourism, event planning, convention sales, marketing, communicating with partners such as hotels and restaurants, and more. By touching on every aspect of the business, I also learned a lot about how the hospitality industry as a whole works and I hope to apply this knowledge to my future work.
What are your future plans?
Having worked on projects relating to arts and culture throughout this internship, I hope to work in a position in the future that can combine arts, culture, and entertainment with hospitality!
