The Certificate in Mortgage Finance and Underwriting is being offered by the Schack Institute of Real Estate. Mortgage financing is a key component of most commercial real estate transactions. Students who complete this certificate will gain an understanding of the concepts and tools used by lenders and analysts when underwriting deals, thus better preparing them for careers in the field. The coursework is geared toward individuals with existing experience in real estate finance and investment.
For those students with limited experience in real estate finance and investment, it is recommended to take REFI1-CE9351/Real Estate Financial Analysis as a prerequisite before declaring candidacy and enrolling for this certificate.
This certificate is awarded to those who successfully complete the three required courses and two electives. Students may complete the certificate by taking all five courses in one semester. Students must complete all courses within two years.

For those students with limited experience in real estate finance and investment, we recommend taking REFI1-CE9351/Real Estate Financial Analysis for background knowledge.
While there are no formal prerequisites, REFI1-CE9500/Underwriting and Structuring Office, Retail, and Industrial Loans builds upon the principles and techniques covered in REFI1-CE9502/Underwriting and Structuring Multifamily Loans and we recommend taking that course first. However, there are no prerequisites and there is no order to follow. For those students with limited experience in real estate finance and investment, we recommend taking REFI1-CE9351/Real Estate Financial Analysis first.
This certificate is designed for individuals with prior experience in real estate finance and investment who wish to deepen their understanding of mortgage finance and underwriting concepts. For those students with limited experience in real estate finance and investment, we recommend taking REFI1-CE9351/Real Estate Financial Analysis first.
Real Estate Financial Analysis/REFI1-CE9351 is more of a prerequisite for the program and will not be applied toward the electives for the program.

It’s preferable if you do, but you can still declare candidacy even after taking a course. Declaring candidacy does not commit you to completing it, but you will receive a 10% discount on future NYU SPS continuing education courses.
Assuming the course is part of the certificate, yes, but only if the course was taken within an acceptable time frame. The academic department gives students a specific amount of time to complete a certificate. The start date would be adjusted to the first class to which we applied the discount.
Yes, if a student declares candidacy for a certificate and achieves an average overall grade of B or higher in courses counting toward the certificate, they will be awarded a certificate badge upon completion, which will be shareable on their resume and LinkedIn profile.
No, continuing education courses and certificates do not qualify for financial aid.
Most continuing education programs do not count as credit toward a degree.
