The Certificate in Learning Design is targeted toward professionals who are responsible for creating training and development experiences in organizations. There is a growing demand for immediate and impactful learning design in the workplace. The learning includes the application of adult learning theory and practical approaches to designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating experiences. The Certificate consists of two required foundational courses and two electives and is expected to take up to two semesters to complete. Upon completion of this certificate, students will be able to apply the core principles of learning and training development in a variety of industries.

Certificate Specifics

The Certificate in Learning Design is targeted toward professionals responsible for creating training and development experiences in organizations. Whether you are looking to move in this field and need to build skills, or you are an “accidental trainer” at work and need to refresh your toolkit, this certificate provides a solid foundation in designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating training experiences at work.

This certificate is delivered entirely via an online synchronous format. Classes meet at the specified days and times on NYU Zoom.

No, classes do not need to be taken in any particular order. However, we recommend beginning with either Learning Design: Fundamentals or Learning Design: Practices. You must complete both the Fundamentals and the Practices course before taking the elective course Learning Design: Capstone.

Yes. However, please be mindful of other commitments. Attendance is expected at every session, and instructors assign work to be completed outside of class.

No, so please plan your schedule appropriately. In the Fall semester, the following courses are offered: Learning Design: Fundamentals; Learning Technology and Tools; and Learning Design Consulting. In the Spring semester, the following courses are offered: Learning Design: Practices; Learning Design Consulting; and Learning Design: Capstone. In the Summer semester, the following courses are offered: Learning Design: Fundamentals; Learning Technology and Tools; and Learning Design: Capstone.

General Certificate FAQ

It’s preferable if you do, but you can still declare candidacy even after taking a course. Declaring candidacy does not commit you to completing it, but you will receive a 10% discount on future NYU SPS continuing education courses.

 

Assuming the course is part of the certificate, yes, but only if the course was taken within an acceptable time frame. The academic department gives students a specific amount of time to complete a certificate. The start date would be adjusted to the first class to which we applied the discount.  

 

Yes, if a student declares candidacy for a certificate and achieves an average overall grade of B or higher in courses counting toward the certificate, they will be awarded a certificate badge upon completion, which will be shareable on their resume and LinkedIn profile.

 

No, continuing education courses and certificates do not qualify for financial aid. 

 

Most continuing education programs do not count as credit toward a degree.
