Barbara Borst teaches courses on refugees and internally displaced persons, children and youth in the global context, democratic transitions, news media and international affairs, global civil society, African affairs, and professional writing. She has led global field intensives on humanitarian aid to Tanzania and Uganda, and on development to South Africa and Ghana. She also has extensive experience as a journalist reporting from the U.S. and several countries abroad and has taught at NYU’s Journalism Institute.
While based abroad for a dozen years, in Nairobi, Johannesburg, Paris and Toronto, Barbara Borst reported for Newsday, The Boston Globe, The Dallas Morning News, The Los Angeles Times and Inter Press Service news agency. At The Associated Press in New York, she was an editor on the international desk and frequently reported from the United Nations. Her articles also have been published in The Huffington Post and GlobalPost and on her website, Civicidea.com.
