Writers' Workshop and Tutorial

Combining the dynamic engagement of small peer workshops and one-on-one conferences with an accomplished, professional editor, this course is open to writers of fiction and creative nonfiction. Begin each session with a private, individual meeting to go over your work with the instructor, and reconvene after lunch for a peer workshop that includes critiques of both in-progress student work and professional published writing. Walk away with substantive feedback on up to 60 double-spaced pages from your projects, including novels and short stories, memoirs, essays written for MFA applications, and other works of creative nonfiction. Space in this class is strictly limited to six writers, so early enrollment is strongly encouraged.

Admission is by permission of the instructor. As admission is strictly limited and students are accepted on a rolling basis, the course may fill before the start of the semester, so interested students are urged to apply at their earliest convenience. To apply, email five pages of a writing sample, as well as a statement about yourself detailing your writing experience and reasons for wanting to take this class, to Kenneth French at kf38@nyu.edu. Please include your phone number and email address. Two weeks before the class begins, students will email 30 pages (double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font) to the instructor and each colleague for review. For questions about the application process and deadline, please email sps.cala@nyu.edu.
