Blockchain in Sports
Blockchain technology is impacting every industry, and the sports industry is no exception. A blockchain is a type of database that stores information in blocks across many computers that are linked together in a chain. Blockchains are shared, transparent, distributed, immutable ledgers that facilitate the process of recording transactions and tracking assets. An asset can be tangible — a house, a car, sports ticket — or intangible like intellectual property, such as patents, copyrights, or branding. Virtually anything of value can be tracked and traded on a blockchain network, reducing risk and cutting costs for all involved.
This course examines blockchain fundamentals through a series of readings, videos, short assignments, and group discussions. We will explore the strengths and weaknesses of blockchain, how it is currently being used in the business world, and h ow it is influencing the sports world by discussing specific applications of blockchain in sports. Expect to leave the course with foundational knowledge as well as a vision for practical applications of blockchain in a sports context.
Students pursuing the Certificate in Sports Technology and Innovation are required to complete Foundations in Digital Disruption/TGSC1-CE1007 as part of the certificate. However, there is no required order of completion for courses in the program as long as Foundations in Digital Disruption is one of the four earned toward the certificate.
