Telling the Story Through Data: Techniques for Sports Professionals

Data is the lifeblood of most sports. Data visualization is the means by which much of this data becomes actionable for coaches, athletes, fans, and sports professionals. While sports journalists often use data visualization in storytelling, other sports professionals are turning to data visualizations to help sell their stories. Storytelling with data is the most effective way to bring important sports data to life, so that it is understood, evaluated, and acted on by athletes and managers. In this course, students will work on connecting the analysis and finding the story that supports the data. The course also will demonstrate how to frame the visualization narrative around the level of information that the audience requires.
