Basics of Nonprofit Finances

Nonprofit organizations exist to pursue missions that address the needs of society. These organizations receive funds from individual donors, government entities, foundations, corporations, special events, and investment income. This course will provide a basic overview of nonprofit financial management and will discuss tax-exempt status, preparation of financial statements, and reporting to the IRS and state regulatory offices. Since volunteer board members often work closely with staff to prepare financial reports, this course will provide effective working models for volunteer and staff partnership in preparing such reports. In order to be an effective nonprofit, an organization must adhere to transparent communications and reporting. Gain the ability to understand and explain a nonprofit organization’s financial reports, which helps to ensure transparency and enhances stewardship efforts.
