Writing for the Screen: An Exercise-Based Approach
Are you new to screenwriting or experienced but stuck? When it’s time to write, do you suddenly notice the dirty dishes or those unanswered emails? This complete course in screenwriting teaches you the tools of the trade and gets you writing from the first day. You’ll work on fun, carefully designed exercises, in class and at home, for which you will receive instructor feedback. Exercises include individual “free-writes” and collaborative work with other students. Students already working on a screenplay can tailor these exercises to improve their script-in-progress, while beginners can use them to generate new story ideas. Each exercise is preceded by a lecture on a specific element of the craft. You’ll learn how to develop compelling premises, write scenes with meaningful conflict, use subtext to improve dialogue, create fascinating characters, structure stories for maximum impact, and more. Designed for writers at all levels—beginning to advanced—and for film, TV, or any type of visual storytelling. Registering at least three weeks prior to the course start date is highly recommended.
This course may be used to fulfill the requirements of the Certificate in Writing and Producing for Film and Television. It may be taken to pursue the certificate, or as a standalone course. Certificate students may take this course as a substitution for Beginning Screenwriting.
You might also consider taking TV and Film Producing, a single course that fulfills the requirements for the Certificate in TV and Film Producing (Accelerated).
