Diversity, Race and Media: From Films and TV to Podcasts and New Media

In 2020, the global wave of protests following George Floyd’s assassination became a wake-up call for media makers to denounce systemic racism. Since then, there has been a proliferation of media reports that some critics say are superficial and lacking signs of substantive or impactful social change. As our world continues to consume media in a variety of forms –visual media, podcasts, digital platforms–it remains essential to question the circulation of biased assumptions and racial stereotypes through different outlets that often overlap offline and online. In this class, we will analyze the relationships between these different media and audiences, information, and power through the lens of critical race media literacy. You will gain a more complex understanding of our contemporary mediascape, and examine how individuals, groups and organizations construct media messages about race that reflect their own values. Every week, we will look at different media–from films and social promotions to podcasts and social networks–focusing on a specific case study to analyze techniques media producers use to hold our attention.
Registering at least three weeks prior to the course start date is highly recommended.
This course is part of the Certificate in Professional Writing and Communications, the Certificate in Journalism, and the Certificate in Storytelling. It may be taken to pursue these certificates, or as a standalone course. Questions?
