Feature Writing in the Digital Age

This practical workshop is designed to prepare you for writing and publishing feature articles. Learn how to hone your interview skills, pitch your story to editors, and present a balanced narrative written with clarity and style. We will examine published stories and share student drafts to discuss how to write an arresting lead and a well-structured story. We will also discuss the evolving ethics of using Chat GPT and other AI and how journalists are using these tools. Course work includes numerous out-of-class writing/reporting assignments as well as commenting on fellow students’ drafts via Google Docs and Zoom discussions. You will receive professional editing from the instructor and valuable feedback from other students on your writing. Prominent editors/writers invited as guest speakers, whose work has appeared in such online outlets as VICE, Bloomberg News, The New York Times and The Daily Beast, will talk about what they look for in features. The goal is to complete one full-length feature story suitable for submission to media outlets, including websites.

This course may be used to fulfill the requirements of the Certificate in Journalism and the Certificate in Storytelling. It may be taken to pursue these certificates, or as a standalone course.
