The Structure of Language

Teaching a foreign language requires a strong grounding in the fundamental principles governing that language’s grammar, lexis, and phonology. This course will examine the grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation of English and provide you with the necessary framework to develop skills for practical classroom applications.

You'll Walk Away with

  • Basic working knowledge of the rules and conventions of English grammar, including but not limited to the formation of phrases, clauses, and sentences; tense, time, and aspect; active and passive voice; and modality
  • A basic working knowledge of the rules and conventions of English lexis, including but not limited to synonyms/antonyms/roots, spelling, and word choice
  • A basic working knowledge of the rules and conventions of English phonology, including but not limited to pronunciation of phonemes, intonation (pitch, stress, and rhythm), and linked speech
  • The ability to apply the knowledge outlined above to hands-on lesson planning and teaching
