Script to Screen: Selections from The Black List

What is The Black List? Once synonymous with something bad, the term today refers to something desirable—an exclusive, year-end list voted on by Hollywood studio executives of their favorite scripts circulating the town but not yet made. It is now something that top screenwriters vie to be chosen for almost as much as an award nomination. Screenplays from legendary writers such as Aaron Sorkin and Quentin Tarantino have graced the list, as well as scripts from then-unknowns, including Diablo Cody. In this course, we’ll read and discuss—from a screenwriter’s and a filmmaker’s point of view—an assortment of Black List scripts, and then watch the films and discuss Black List success stories. Readings and screenings may include Margin Call, Juno, The Fault in Our Stars, The Imitation Game, The Social Network, and The King’s Speech.
