“Returning: The Ordeal of Olive Oatman” An Exclusive Opera Performance and Lecture for the Academy of Lifelong Learning

Returning; The Ordeal of Olive Oatman,is based on the true story of a Mormon girl taken captive by Native Americans in 1851. Adopted as a daughter of the Mohave tribe, Olive was given an elaborate facial tattoo and ultimately returned to white society, where she began a successful lecture tour across America. She later married a wealthy rancher who forbade her from sharing her story. In this multidisciplinary event, you will learn about the challenges and achievements of this strong and resourceful Mormon woman in the context of 19th-century America, as well as the meaning of tattoos then and now.
