Azadeh Malekan, MA Teaching of American Sign Language (ASL) as a Foreign Language,
Teachers College, Columbia University, has taught ASL since 2011. Born in Iran surrounded by
languages, she became fascinated with visual language acquisition. She believes that a holistic,
inclusive educational model can profoundly change students' perceived self-efficacy and,
ultimately, their success. She has taught at LaGuardia Community College and currently teaches
at Hofstra University, Molloy College, and Nassau Community College. As a Remote Adjunct
Professor with the University of Virginia’s revered ASL program, she honed her digital
pedagogy and cultivated tools to foster online student engagement. Inspired by her students, she
created AtoZmindfuleducation.com as a community platform providing pedagogical tools for
teachers. She feels privileged to be a teacher and passionate about the intersection of ASL and
education.
