Tom McConnell is an adjunct instructor in the Jonathan M Tisch Center for Hospitality at NYU. Tom has been a member of the adjunct faculty since 2020 and, prior to that, had lectured in numerous hospitality-related classes at NYU over the past two decades.Tom’s academic focus at NYU is on the real estate and finance sector of the hospitality industry, with a specific concentration on debt and equity structure, development, market analysis, valuation, and asset management – as well as the hotel industry’s unique inter-relationship of property operations and real estate value.
Tom’s hotel career started by working in various operational roles at resort hotels in Newport RI, followed by attending Cornell University’s hotel school and receiving a master’s degree in hospitality management. After graduating, Tom moved to New York City and worked as a hotel consultant for several global firms, including Laventhol & Horwath, Kenneth Leventhal and Co (now E and Y) and Arthur Andersen. He performed a wide range of analytical assignments associated with all types of lodging projects, including hotel development, market analysis, operational consulting, appraisal/valuation and transaction advisory. Tom and his team performed work in every major North American market, as well as international locations including Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. After twenty years in consulting, Tom joined Insignia/ESG, and later Cushman & Wakefield, and led a national team focused on transaction advisory including property sales and debt/equity placement for lodging properties and portfolios throughout the US.
In addition to teaching at NYU, Tom currently acts as senior advisor to GreenLake Asset Management, a commercial real estate debt fund based in Los Angeles. Tom is also the owner of the Vineyard Square Hotel & Suites, a boutique hotel located on Martha’s Vineyard in Edgartown, Massachusetts.
