Hotel Industry Digital Transformation: The Current State of Play

2 women looking at report

NYU SPS Tisch Center of Hospitality and PricewaterhouseCoopers researchers came together to research the current state of digital transformation and technology innovation in hospitality. The findings from interviews and focus groups with major hotel brand executives, operators, owners, and technology vendors illustrate five areas of priority to elevate technology-enabled experiences including automation, standardized integration, data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and technology investments.

US Traveler Sentiments on Attribute-Based Shopping

NYU SPS Tisch Center of Hospitality and StayNTouch have collaborated on a traveler sentiment research analyzing guest opinions relating to attribute-based shopping in hospitality. Researchers surveyed nearly 1,000 U.S. travelers to uncover their opinions and sentiments surrounding a significantly more customizable booking experience. The study led by Dr. Vanja Bogicevic and graduate student Owen Wexman was presented at HITEC Orlando 2022 conference in June 2022.

US Traveler Sentiments on Attribute-Based Shopping

Owen tells us about his independent study project experience about project.

How did you get involved in this study?
I had a course with Professor Bogicevic over a summer semester that I thought was great. Then, sometime during the following fall semester, I ran into her at a Fireside Chat. I mentioned that I had been doing research with another faculty member and was looking to get involved with another independent study.

How did you conduct your research?
I began my research with NYU libraries to start familiarizing myself with the literature. Then the study involved a Qualtrics survey that Professor Bogicevic and I put together, which covered a broad scope to help us develop a comprehensive understanding of consumer sentiments toward Attribute-Based Selling (ABS).

What were your key takeaways from this project and collaboration with StayNTouch?
Beyond the results and conclusions from the study, my takeaways include a greater understanding of how to conduct formal research/surveys and how to ask/pose questions strategically. I'd also say that I benefited from collaborating with a company partner like StayNTouch. The corporate world has a different cadence than the classroom. Having deadlines and deliverables in a context similar to a client helped prepare me for my post-graduate position as a consultant at Deloitte. I would absolutely recommend students at SPS take advantage of opportunities like these as they're a great way to prepare for your career post-school.
