A Sneak Peek at NYU SPI 2019

By Center for Publishing Staff

Ready for a sneak peek of what’s in store for the 2019 NYU Summer Publishing Institute?

Every year we welcome more than 200 guest speakers from across book publishing and magazine/digital media to share their expertise and insight with our students. This summer we’re thrilled to announce our two keynote speakers: Markus Dohle, CEO of Penguin Random House, and David Haskell, the newly named Editor-in-Chief of New York Media.

Book Session Keynote Speaker: Markus Dohle, CEO of Penguin Random House

As CEO of Penguin Random House since July 1, 2013, Markus Dohle leads the world’s largest trade book publisher, with operations in 20 countries and sales into over 100. Mr. Dohle is a wonderfully engaging speaker and the perfect person to give our students an inside look at how book publishing functions, as well as trends and topics of interest and projections for the future of publishing. Where will the jobs be? What skills are needed? Penguin Random House’s 250 editorially independent imprints publish 15,000 new adult and children’s fiction and nonfiction titles annually in English, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. Each year, Penguin Random House sells more than 700 million print, audio and ebooks across the globe. We’re thrilled to have Markus Dohle join us for the 2019 NYU Summer Publishing Institute.

Magazine/Digital Media Keynote Speaker: David Haskell, Editor-in-Chief of New York Media

David Haskell has been an editor at New York Media since 2007, when he was invited by former Editor-in-Chief Adam Moss to guest-edit a special issue on London. He has edited almost three hundred features for the magazine, and was closely involved with the launch and development of The Strategist, helping expand the magazine section into a digital publication. Mr. Haskell represents the new breed of editor who deeply understands both print and digital, and wears many hats; editor, project manager, entrepreneur, and more. In addition to editorial, he helped to launch projects like The Cut on Tuesdays (a weekly podcast from New York’s beloved fashion vertical) and The Strategist, helping expand the magazine section into a digital publication whose business success is directly linked to how entertaining and trustworthy it is to read. He will help our students understand where magazine media is going and how they can be part of this ongoing story.

In addition to these powerhouse keynote speakers, this year’s Summer Publishing Institute will offer our blend of hands-on workshops, career preparation sessions, industry visits, lectures, networking opportunities and more. Here are just some of the sessions we have planned for SPI 2019:
