Center for Global Affairs Alumni Spotlight: George Edwards

M.S. in Global Affairs ‘19

Concentration in Human Rights and International Law

Currently, George is the Director of Development at the Association to Benefit Children.

What makes you proud to be an alum?
CGA is such a vibrant hub of different view points all with the same goal of making the world a better place.

What are your main areas of responsibility in your current role?
I'm responsible for raising over $4 million in donations each year to support our work with vulnerable children and families in New York City. I also write grants, run our website, and lead our communications efforts.

How did your time at the CGA help prepare you for this role?
My time at CGA prepared me to be adaptable and ready to take on any challenge. Even though my focus at CGA was global, the hard skills I learned during the program - especially monitoring and evaluation and persuasive writing - have helped me transfer to a very local nonprofit. Being able to look at different perspectives and understand what motivates people is a key part of fundraising and is also a skill I developed at CGA where understanding all the perspectives on an argument was always encouraged.

Any favorite memories at the CGA?
I loved all my classes and the spirit of the space, but the GFI to Tanzania and Uganda was particularly special. I still talk regularly to nonprofit leaders I met out there and it's great to see how their work continues to grow.
