Dr. Brittany Smart is a scientific writer, editor, and rhetorician whose background resides in technical communication, the rhetoric of health and medicine, information literacy, and digital communication and design. She earned her Ph.D. in English Rhetoric and Composition from the University of Louisville where she examined the rhetorical function of infection control guidelines and high-stakes clinician communication and decision-making during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a scientific writer, she has supported numerous collaborative writing efforts for major R01 grant proposals, in addition to crafting accessible patient-facing educational materials and disseminating outcomes and impact for large-scale community health initiatives. Her writing has appeared in Community Health Equity Research and Policy, Technical Communication Quarterly, and Rhetoric of Health and Medicine Journal, with work forthcoming in NEJM Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery. She has presented her research at the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), Rhetoric of Health and Medicine Symposium, and the Global Conference on Women and Gender. Brittany is most passionate about preparing students entering scientific, technical, and professional careers for writing in their field.
