Dr. Sayida Self is a cultural anthropologist and social sciences professor. She is a graduate of Northwestern University and The CUNY Graduate Center. Dr. Self conducted her PhD fieldwork in South Africa using oral histories to document political activism of Black women and highlighting the trauma of gendered violence within political spaces. Dr. Self worked as principal investigator for the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention HIV/AIDS projects, is a former member of the NYC HIV Planning Council and volunteered with the New York Doula Project. Dr. Self has taught university in East Africa and traveled extensively through West and South Africa. Currently, she is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Africana Department at Queens College and advocates with immigration justice programs for West African asylum seekers. Dr. Self’s academic interests are African Studies, Diaspora Studies, gender activism and social movements.
