Gerald Protheroe is a native of South Wales in the United Kingdom. He was awarded a BA with Honors from Jesus College, a constituent college of Oxford University and a ‘Blue’ in Association Football in 1972. He gained an MA with Distinction from the London School of Economics and a PhD from London University in 1999. He is an international historian with a strong focus on 20 th century diplomatic history. His areas of expertise are European History especially the origins of the First and Second World Wars, and the Vietnam War during the Kennedy administration. He is the author of Searching for Security in a New Europe: The Diplomatic Career of Sir George Russell Clerk, (Routledge, Taylor & Francis, 2006) a study of the British ambassador to Czechoslovakia, Turkey and France in the years before the Second World War. He has also published and lectured on the career of Roger Hilsman who was assistant secretary of state for the Far East in the Kennedy administration. Dr. Protheroe came to the United States in 1985. He was the Head of the History Department at the Browning School from 1996 until his retirement in 2021. He has been an adjunct associate professor of Global Studies with New York University since 2001 where he has taught courses in international history. He received the SCPS award for teaching excellence in 2006. At the Browning School he was awarded the Sabet award for excellence in teaching in 2007 and was also the recipient of the Stephen M. Clement Chair of the Humanities in 2013.
