John Burnett is the Managing Director and Founder of 1 Empire Group, a consulting firm specializing in business analytics and development, operations, process re-engineering, growth strategies, risk management, and strategic communications.
John is a business executive with over 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. He has held leadership roles in risk management, compliance, and operations for Citigroup, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, and S&P Global.
In John's most recent leadership role at S&P Global, his responsibilities included operational risk and the effectiveness of internal controls for pricing and analytics in physical commodity markets for petroleum, petrochemicals, gas, electricity, steel, and metals. In addition to enhancing operational performance, John advised on risks related to acquisitions, joint ventures, and channel partner relationships.
In previous corporate roles, John developed risk assessment programs that captured inherent and residual risks, along with the mitigating controls, to maximize enterprise value. He also managed operational controls for structured financing and investment products, mutual funds, unit trusts, annuities, CDOs, corporate and individual retirement plans, banking products, including CDs, HELOCs, and cash management.
John's sound business acumen is matched only by his strong sense of civic responsibility, as he lends his time to several community-based organizations and advises entrepreneurs of tomorrow. John currently serves local communities through various not-for-profit organizations, including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., One Hundred Black Men of New York, and Urban Resource Institute.
John also understands the importance of education, giving back to his alma mater, and serving
the broader community. He is a board member of New York University's Alumni Association, a volunteer with P.E.N.C.I.L. (Public Education Needs Civic Involvement in Learning), and a founder of the Summit Academy Charter School in Red Hook, NY. John is also an adjunct instructor at Hampton University and an adjunct assistant professor at New York University.
John enjoys public service and addressing the needs of the broader community. He was a candidate for New York City Comptroller in the 2013 general election. Since 2014, John has written opinion editorials featured in Black Enterprise, NY Daily News, NY Post, The Hill, U.S. News and World Report, Wall Street Journal, and many others, covering a wide array of issues from business and the economy to geopolitics and policy. He is also a frequent commentator on Fox Business Network, Newsmax, New York 1, PIX 11 News, and international news stations based in Africa, Australia, the Middle East, and the United Kingdom.
John holds a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Leadership and Management from New York University and is the recipient of a Founders' Day University Honors Scholar Award. He also holds an MBA from The Johnson School of Management at Cornell University.
