Dr. Shaffer’s teaching centers on visual cultures, past and present. She studied art history and history as an undergraduate at the College of William and Mary, and earned her Ph.D. from Columbia University, where she focused on the art and architecture of the European Middle Ages. In addition to her ongoing scholarship on medieval buildings, she is involved in research on, and the preservation of, American vernacular architecture, these interests reflecting her abiding concern with ways in which works of visual culture convey essential meanings in transforming contexts.
