Growing up, David Delatorre spent a lot of time living in hotels as his family traveled between Spain and Mexico. Yet, working in hospitality was not something he ever imagined until his experience at NYU SPS transformed his perspective. Through the MS in Integrated Marketing, Delatorre began to perceive hospitality as a dynamic, exciting career path from a marketing standpoint.

Having someone guide me through the industry nuances and share insider knowledge has been invaluable. It’s helped me shape my career goals with clarity.”

Delatorre considered several graduate programs, but chose NYU for its unique balance of academic rigor and practical experience. “I wanted a program that wasn’t just theory but that prepared me for the industry,” he explains. “NYU stands out because of its focus on current marketing trends and the chance to learn from professors who have been in the field, not just in the classroom.”

One highlight for Delatorre has been learning directly from professors who bring real-world expertise. “They don’t just teach concepts, they share stories from their careers and challenge us to think critically,” he says. “That kind of mentorship makes you feel like you’re part of a professional community.”

One of Delatorre’s favorite experiences thus far was participating in the IM&C Destination NYC Challenge, a marketing competition in which student teams are invited to pitch innovative marketing ideas for the Bridge Hotel Group hotels in New York City neighborhoods. The competition is one of IM&C’s many degree-adjacent opportunities that bring students and leading professionals together to solve real-world marketing and business issues beyond the classroom. Winning the challenge was a game-changer. “It gave me the confidence and credibility to pursue an internship at Wyndham Hotels,” he tells us.

Delatorre’s internship at Wyndham has been a hands-on extension of his classroom learning where he is able to implement brand strategy, digital tools, and customer insights daily. His mentorship with the Bridge Hotel Group, which was secured by winning the Integrated Marketing & Communications Destination NYC Challenge, further deepened his understanding of hospitality marketing.

Learning From Leaders Who "Walk the Walk"

Delatorre credits the program’s faculty and student clubs for connecting him to impact career-building opportunities. “Professors have introduced me to industry events and encouraged me to get involved,” he says. “Student organizations also provide a platform to meet peers and professional

Living and studying in New York City has enriched Delatorre’s experience far beyond the classroom. “The city itself is a classroom,” he says. “You’re surrounded by companies, brands, and diverse cultures. It pushes you to think bigger and adapt quickly.”

Reflecting on his journey so far, Delatorre says, “I came in with curiosity and left with skills, confidence, and a clearer career path,” he says. “I’m excited about roles that combine marketing strategy with hospitality innovation.”

To those considering the program, Delatorre recommends they, “be open, take risks, and dive into everything the program offers. Your growth happens outside your comfort zone, and this program will push you there, but with support. Whether you’re shifting careers or stepping up in your field, this program can help you get where you want to go.”
