Reflections from a Decade Teaching Hospitality

<p>Jing Yang received her PhD in Hospitality Administration from Oklahoma State University. Her research areas of interest include hospitality marketing, mergers and acquisitions, tourism economic impact, as well as hotel and restaurant branding. She has published and presented more than 30 research papers at hospitality-refereed journals and national/international conferences, and also served as a reviewer for many hospitality journals and conferences. Her contracts and projects have been grounded in tourism development and promotion.</p>
Helping Students Make Connections
<p>Yang joined the <a href="/content/sps-nyu/about/academic-divisions-and-departments/jonathan-m-tisch-center-of-hospitality.html" title="Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality">Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality</a> in 2018 and has since taught courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels in the areas of hospitality accounting, financial management, corporate finance, and consumer behaviors. 2024 marks her seventh year at the Tisch Center as a clinical assistant professor and concludes her decade-long role as student advocate and educator. </p>
<p>"Fresh out of college, I was fortunate to establish travel networks and create training manuals for foreign adoptive families navigating civil and legal systems in China," she recalls. "Drawn to stirring interests, I started teaching while attending graduate school. It's such a rewarding feeling to help students make connections between ideas, succeed in class, and realize their potential. Their enthusiasm and curiosity, in turn, motivate me to embrace the career path to become a university professor."</p>
<p>Since then, Yang has witnessed thousands of students receive honors/scholarships, complete their degrees, reach career aspirations and shine in their respective capacities. She's fortunate to work with and learn from them, aligning her professional goals with their educational achievements. "These are the daily reminders of why I am passionate about my role," she beams.</p>
A Program that Reaches Beyond Tradition
<p>The NYU SPS Bachelor of Science in Hospitality, Travel, and Tourism Management is at heart an applied business degree that reaches beyond traditional hospitality and tourism programs. Deeply rooted in New York City and with its unparalleled network of accomplished alumni, the program provides students with a pulse on internships, careers, and industries. </p>
<p>"Students have positive experiences with dynamic classes, Study Away programs, GFIs, and Innovation Hub, all designed to immerse our students to develop a global mindset that can critically cope with emerging opportunities in the travel and hospitality sectors."</p>
<p>When asked what advice she gives to students and early career hospitality professionals, Yang's words are both broad and deep. "Keep growing the networks you've developed in school—that includes peers, professors, alumni and Tisch Center partners. And join professional organizations and associations, for example the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) or Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI). Don't hesitate to upskill yourself—attend industry conferences, take online courses to learn a new technology, and read trade magazines."</p>
