The Bridging Generations event featured a conversation with Joshua Yunatov, a Fall 2023 HI-Hub Incubator cohort alum, who shared his entrepreneurial journey, lessons learned, and invaluable advice for aspiring business founders. Joshua recounted how he started in the Incubator program with two business ideas, both of which were selected, forcing him to make the decision on which to pursue. The experience taught him the fundamentals of launching, owning, and effectively pitching a business. He worked with five mentors, each offering different perspectives, and found the most valuable lesson was learning how to take in all the advice, be realistic, and make decisions that aligned with his vision.

Reflecting on Pitch Day, Joshua emphasized that success often comes down to how well entrepreneurs articulate their ideas. The winners aren’t necessarily those with the best ideas but those who can communicate them most effectively. He also stressed the importance of being adaptable, knowing when to pivot, and being prepared for the unexpected. Regarding the application process, he advised future applicants to create a visually appealing and compelling pitch deck while ensuring they can clearly articulate their business concept.

For those currently in the Incubator, Joshua urged them to complete their pitch decks early and dedicate time to practice. A strong pitch can leave a lasting impression, and even if someone doesn’t win, the event is an opportunity to attract potential supporters and investors. He also highlighted the importance of preparing for any and all questions about the business by working with mentors and peers. This not only strengthens the pitch but also builds confidence in discussing the company from multiple angles. His key takeaway was that networking is invaluable, quoting “your network is your net worth.”

Looking back on his own Pitch Day experience, Joshua shared that he still keeps in touch with the mentors he met during the program. He described it as a fun and transformative experience, encouraging attendees to enjoy the moment and seize every opportunity. Beyond pitching a company, he emphasized the importance of pitching oneself, being able to show character and passion. Investors don’t just invest in ideas, they also invest in people. Leaving a lasting impression can open unexpected doors.

Joshua closed with advice that resonated with all in attendance: continue thinking like an entrepreneur and putting yourself out there. The entrepreneurial journey is filled with highs and lows, and anything can happen along the way. He spoke about how traveling and meeting people from diverse backgrounds helped him grow and encouraged others to attend events beyond their immediate circles. The best support and opportunities often come from the most unexpected places.
