The Short Film Blueprint: From Script to Production
A successful short film does more than tell a smaller story—it tells a complete, compelling story with precision. Every character, image, line of dialogue, and dramatic turn must earn its place.
In this hands-on workshop, students will develop an original, character-driven short film from initial concept through a production-ready screenplay and directorial plan. Through screenings and analysis of accomplished short and feature films, students will explore the essential tools of cinematic storytelling: dramatic structure, conflict, character development, dialogue, screenplay format, pacing, and visual expression.
The course will also introduce the creative and practical work of directing. Students will learn how to translate a screenplay into images, performances, locations, shots, and sound, while considering the real-world demands of production. In-class writing exercises, peer workshops, and individualized coaching will guide each student through the process of drafting and revising a 7–12-minute screenplay.
By the end of the course, students will have a polished short-film script, a storyboard, and a clear creative blueprint for bringing their film to the screen. The class emphasizes active creation, collaboration, and constructive workshopping over traditional lecture.
