Write to Publish: How to Get Your Work in Print and Beyond

This course will teach you how to break through the noise and get attention for your writing from readers, editors, and gatekeepers. Whether you are writing an article, essay, nonfiction book, memoir, or short-form piece, this eight-week online course offers strategies, tips, and tricks on how to relaunch your creativity, develop craft, mine your personal life for ideas, and choose the best format for your work. You will learn how to pitch in order to break into online and print publications; create a compelling story arc; locate research and interview experts; write flash fiction and micro memoir; revise your work for maximum impact; review a contract; build your social media platform; and protect your psyche from rejection. Lastly, you will also gain insight and advice from editors and agents. Whether you are a new writer, seasoned writer, blogger, or just curious, you will leave this class with one ready-to-publish personal essay, the first pages of your memoir or book, or a hybrid reported piece. Most important, you will leave with skills that will last a lifetime. Registering at least three weeks prior to the course start date is highly recommended.

This course may be used to fulfill the requirements of the Certificate in Professional Writing and Communications and Certificate in Storytelling. It may be taken to pursue these certificates, or as a standalone course.
