Throughout his illustrious career, the beloved German Romantic composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) created a treasure trove of works for small ensembles. By using intimate combinations of piano, strings and wind instruments, Brahms crafted melodies and harmonies that touch our soul. We will explore such works as the String Sextet, the Piano Quartet, the Horn Trio, the Cello Sonata No. 2, the Violin Sonata No. 3, the Clarinet Trio, and the Piano Quintet, and reveal their origins, influences, and place in history. Historical recordings and video will supplement lectures and discussion.
