From Hadrian’s Wall in the North of England and from Bath to Chester, this course explores many remarkable places that give us insight into the lifestyles of people in England who lived during the Roman occupation 2,000 years ago. Study villas filled with exquisite mosaic pavements, Roman baths, the Mithras Temple that was discovered in London in 1954, and other exquisite mosaics that were discovered in London in 2022. Explore the ruined theater at St. Albans, rare artifacts of colorful rooms from a Roman “hotel” in the ancient port of Dover, and many less well-known but equally intriguing sites. Together, we will also look at the fascinating Roman treasures that can be found in museums today, from glassware and ceramics to a child’s leather shoe.
