Becoming a Physician: A Career Path Overview
Are you interested in becoming a doctor and working in the medical field? This comprehensive and interactive course is intended for high school students interested in exploring a career in medicine. Participants will join a cohort of like-minded peers to examine one of the fastest-growing and most influential professions.
This student-centered course will provide you with the opportunity to reflect on your interests and strengths as you explore the various opportunities that a career in medicine offers. We’ll cover the full journey from actions you can take in high school, undergraduate study, and preparing for medical school, including the MCAT exam. You learn about internships and “matching days,” as well as life as a resident. You’ll gain an understanding of licensure and scope of practice, too.
Whether you want to provide patient care, conduct research and advance medicine, teach and help develop the next generation of health professionals, or pursue other paths such as inventing new devices, creating technology, or managing healthcare facilities, becoming a physician will open a world of opportunities for you.
Technology plays a vital role throughout the course as you explore the history of medicine, breakthroughs, and ethical issues related to care and technology. You'll engage with cutting-edge trends like telemedicine, robotics, wearable health devices, and AI in diagnostics.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a clearer vision of your future, an understanding of the commitment required to enter the field, and insight into how you can help shape the future of medicine — as a doctor, as a leader, and as an innovator. You’ll walk away with actions you can take in high school and a plan for your next steps.
