This course is a deep-dive into the contemporary practice of book banning and book challenges in the United States. The idea that some books are too dangerous or too harmful for certain audiences underlines the rationale for every book challenge. Unpacking this rationale requires us to grapple with fundamental questions regarding American society and our democratic identity. In a democratic society, is there any justification for banning book? Under what rationale, and in what circumstance, are we comfortable prohibiting access to books, and where should we draw that line? This class will engage with the contesting political and theoretical rationales embraced both by those who support banning certain books, and those who contest them. We will also explore the historical practices of book banning throughout American history, with a focus on episodes that offer insights into the current moment, as well as the current framework by which courts determine the legality of a book prohibition. Finally we will explore book prohibitions indicate about the way that Americans differently view our institutions, culture, and government. Continuing Education Units (CEU) : 1.5
