Buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, Pompeii and neighboring sites around the Bay of Naples have captured the modern imagination with their astonishing state of preservation. These cities, towns, and estates have yielded remarkable finds, painting a vivid picture of Roman life in the first centuries BCE and CE. This course will explore the material, artistic, and architectural remains of these sites: from frescoes, mosaics, and sculpture to dining sets, jewelry, and furniture; from private villas and gardens to public bathhouses, brothels, and snack bars—even the graffiti scrawled on the walls. This course will also consider the history of exploration in the Vesuvian region and will examine some of the exciting discoveries to emerge from archaeological investigations undertaken in recent years.
