Aesthetic ideals change over time. What was considered beautiful in Greek and Roman art changed during Medieval times and then again in the Renaissance. Baroque images of beauty differ from those of the Rococo and Classicism looks back to antique ideals. In Modern and Contemporary art the definition of what is deemed beautiful widens and the possibilities are endless. What do beauty, grace, sprezzatura, the sublime, harmony, and the "je ne sais quoi" of the human figure mean at different times? How do bodies, postures, clothing, hairstyles and make-up express beauty from ancient Egypt to today? We will look at various representations of the female and male ideal, from Nefertiti, Venus, Adonis, Adam, Madonna, Mona Lisa, Endymion, Maja, Odalisque, Olympia, to Marilyn and Barbie, among others.
