Todd Walters has been teaching Conflict Assessment: Theory & Practice with NYU Center for Global Affairs each fall semester since 2017. It was actually the first fully remote class offered by CGA, and helped lay the foundation for remote teaching during the pandemic. Walters also teaches: Introduction to Environmental Peacebuilding since spring 2024. Most recently Walters completed a literature review of Conflict Assessment in Iraq for the European Commission to inform policy decisions and help prioritize and sequence areas of investment. In 2008 Walters founded and was Executive Director of International Peace Park Expeditions for 11 years. IPPE empowers environmental peacebuilding through field-based experiential learning in critical transboundary ecosystems to train conflict sensitive, environmentally sustainable, and culturally aware professionals across multiple fields, in order to address our shared interconnected global challenges. Walters adapted the Peace & Conflict Impact Assessment methodology to transboundary protected areas, and produced short documentary films in the Transcending Boundaries series, which portray multiple stakeholder perspectives concerning environmental peacebuilding in transboundary protected areas. Walters is a member of the Transboundary Conservation Specialist Group at the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) where he co-leads a professional practitioners training initiative.
Walters was the first Fellow at the Policy Center for Environment and Peace at Conservation International, where he provided strategic guidance and technical input, integrating environmental peacebuilding into existing Conservation International programs and new program designs; and spearheaded the partnership building strategy. Walters was a founding Fellow at the Institute for Environmental Diplomacy and Security, and the Environmental Peacebuilding Academy. Walters has published a number of chapters and articles related to environmental peacebuilding and experiential learning. Walters has shared his experiences as a speaker at global conferences, hosted by the IUCN, Convention on Biological Diversity, and a special committee of the United Nations, concerning the Protection of the Environment during times of Armed Conflict. Walters is a National Outdoor Leadership School trained outdoor adventure guide with wilderness first responder emergency medical training, and has led expeditions in dozens of countries around the globe.
